Firefighters Make Progress on Central California Wildfires

Containment grows on coastal blazes

LOMPOC, Calif. (AP) — Firefighters are making progress on trio of wildfires on California’s Central Coast, but officials warn that gusty winds continue to threaten about 150 homes.

Santa Barbara County fire spokesman Mike Eliason says Saturday that an overnight marine layer of cooler, wetter air helped fire crews contain 60 percent of 440-acre blaze.

About 900 people told to evacuate in the city of Lompoc when the blazes erupted on Friday afternoon have returned home. However, fire officials warned that gusty winds Saturday afternoon could blow embers and threaten about 150 homes close to the fire line.
