CHINO HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Aircraft are dropping water and retardant on a wildfire that has burned at least one home in Southern California.

Scott Mclean with the state’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says the blaze broke out Sunday afternoon near Chino Hills and quickly grew to 60 acres.

The fire sent up a huge plume of smoke as it chewed through heavy brush on slopes near a hillside community about 40 miles (65 kilometers) east of downtown Los Angeles.

TV news helicopter footage showed crews battling flames that severely damaged a large home at the edge of the neighborhood.

No injuries have been reported.

The fire occurred as the region swelters under a heat wave accompanied by poor air quality.
