Prescribed Burn in New Hampshire Forest to Improve Habitat

Third attempt at prescribed burn in this area

FARMINGTON, N.H. (AP) — A portion of the blueberry barrens atop New Hampshire’s Blue Job Mountain in Farmington will be set on fire to maintain important habitats and benefit a variety of wildlife.

The forest’s prescribed fire on Thursday will be conducted by several groups, including the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, The Nature Conservancy and the New Hampshire Army Guard. This will be the third attempt at a prescribed burn in this location, with weather and road conditions preventing previous efforts.

This won’t be the first prescribed fire at Blue Job Mountain. Several burns were conducted more than a decade ago.

If successful, trees will re-sprout providing habitat to songbirds whose populations have been declining. Blueberries and flowers would provide a food source to wildlife in the area, from beers to bees.
